Reading Crypto Spot ETF Flows Without Fooling Yourself
Daily net flow is the most quoted crypto number and the easiest to over-interpret. Creation mechanics, not sentiment, explain most of the noise.
Spot ETF flow data is published daily by issuers and aggregated by several vendors. The headline figure — net creations minus redemptions, in dollars — is genuine information, but it measures plumbing as much as it measures conviction.
What net flow measures
An authorised participant creates shares when the ETF trades at a premium and redeems when it trades at a discount. Much of the day-to-day flow is therefore arbitrage closing a basis, not an end investor forming a view.
- Single-day flows are dominated by arbitrage and rebalancing; five-day and twenty-day sums are far more stable.
- A large outflow from one fund alongside inflows elsewhere is usually fee-driven migration, not an exit from the asset.
- Flow measured in dollars conflates unit creation with price. Track units when you want the volume signal.
A workable routine
Sum flows over rolling windows, look at the cross-sectional spread between issuers, and separate the seed-and-launch period of any new fund from its steady state. Reconcile against the fund's reported holdings at least weekly; discrepancies usually mean a settlement timing difference rather than an error.
