Whale Tracking Tools Compared: Coverage and Blind Spots
On-chain explorers, filing scrapers and social aggregators each see one slice. Their blind spots are more informative than their feature lists.
No single tool observes smart money end to end. What matters when choosing one is not the feature list but which part of the picture it structurally cannot see.
Three families of tool
- On-chain explorers see wallet flows in near real time, and cannot see who controls a wallet or anything held off-chain.
- Filing scrapers see legally attested positions, and cannot see anything between filing dates.
- Social aggregators see stated intent fast, and cannot verify that intent was acted on.
Why identity resolution is the hard part
The value is not in any one feed but in linking them: a CIK, a fund letter, an X handle and a wallet cluster resolving to one canonical entity. That linkage is slow to build, easy to get wrong, and the reason most tools stop at a single feed.
When evaluating a tool, ask how it handles a subsidiary filing separately from its parent, and how it treats a wallet cluster whose attribution later turns out to be wrong. The answers tell you more than any dashboard screenshot.
