Alibaba's Tsai: Open-Source AI Is Europe's Best Path Forward

Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai said open-source AI is the best way for Europe to reduce its reliance on US and Chinese technology and build technological self-sufficiency. He urged Europe to establish its own computing infrastructure to train and run AI models, noting that no country would want to fully trust another nation's technology, as a change in government or circumstances could lead to a cutoff in technology supply. Tsai added that Europe has not fully utilized its AI researchers, who are often courted by US and Chinese labs. He called on Europe to leverage proprietary industrial data to train AI models for competitive advantage, citing China's manufacturing sector as an example, where factories hold valuable manufacturing data that could be highly valuable in model training. He also expressed optimism about Europe's emerging cloud service providers—specialized cloud computing companies that operate data centers equipped with AI chips.
