Amazon Prime Air Drone Delivery Expands to 500 US Cities, Intensifying Competition with Wing and Zipline

Amazon.com Inc.'s drone delivery service Prime Air plans to expand to nearly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026.

The company disclosed the Prime Air expansion plans in a blog post on Wednesday, representing a sixfold increase from its current coverage. "We're combining the convenience of ultra-fast drone delivery with the low prices and product selection customers love from Amazon," said David Carbon, Vice President of Amazon Prime Air.

Amazon's drone delivery service plans to launch soon in Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise, with additional communities expected later this year.

The company also revealed that it has completed hundreds of thousands of deliveries this year, conducting thousands of deliveries daily. This positions Amazon as the leader in what it calls the industry's "highest-demand drone delivery service."

Amazon's latest update comes five months after Prime Air Vice President David Carbon predicted at an internal all-hands meeting that the service would achieve 1 million drone deliveries in 2026, which he described as the industry's highest-demand drone delivery service, according to CNBC.

Carbon said in March that customers continue to expect faster delivery speeds and that the company has not yet reached a stage where further speed improvements would yield diminishing returns.

Amazon's Drone Program Faces Intense Competition

Amazon's drone delivery service has been a significant contributor to its delivery capabilities. In 2025, the company delivered over 13 billion items globally at record speed, with more than 8 billion items delivered to US Prime members on the same day or next day. This represents a 30% increase in US same-day or next-day deliveries compared to the previous year.

However, the drone delivery service has also faced challenges. In early 2025, the e-commerce giant suspended commercial drone deliveries in Texas and Arizona after two of its latest-model aircraft crashed at a rain-testing facility. The company had to fix the aircraft's software before resuming operations.

Meanwhile, Amazon also faces intense competition from established rivals in the drone delivery space. Alphabet Inc.'s subsidiary Wing has surpassed 1 million commercial deliveries, operating in 20 US markets through partnerships with Walmart Inc. and DoorDash Inc., while Zipline has completed 2 million deliveries across four continents.
