Amazon.com Inc. shares rose on Monday. Citizens reiterated its market outperform rating and $315 price target, noting that strong revenue growth at OpenAI and Anthropic is a positive signal for cloud providers like AWS. Here's what you need to know.
Amazon shares are on an upward trend. Why is AMZN stock trading higher?
Citizens Sees AI Demand Supporting AWS
Citizens analyst Andrew Boone views the strong performance of leading AI labs as a positive signal for companies that rent out underlying computing capacity, according to Investing.com.
Boone said that when frontier AI developers continue growing at this pace, it shows the massive capital invested in building and training these models is indeed paying off, and once these models are used to answer real queries, this dynamic will benefit infrastructure providers like AWS. He also sees this trend as a signal that hyperscale data center operators will not have much idle server capacity in the near term.
Amazon's Chart Remains Constructive Despite Near-Term Support Proximity
This AI-driven optimism aligns with a still-bullish technical picture. The stock is trading about 5% above its 50-day moving average of $250.15 and roughly 10.2% above its 200-day average of $238.39, with the May golden cross continuing to underpin the broader uptrend.
Recent price action is more of a coin flip. The stock sits almost exactly at its 20-day moving average of $262.95, trading about 0.1% below that level, which short-term traders typically view as a key support. Holding this zone could open the door to retesting recent highs rather than a deeper pullback. The relative strength index is 53.12, a neutral reading indicating the stock is not overextended in either direction, contrasting with the more overbought conditions seen in August.
Traders are watching $287 as resistance, just below the 52-week high near $287.20, and $226 as support, a level associated with the deeper pullback zone earlier this year.
Amazon Outperforms Its Sector Amid Broader Market Softness
Beyond the technicals, Amazon's relative strength is also notable against its sector. The stock is up 1.63% today, outpacing the 0.52% gain in the consumer discretionary sector, while the Nasdaq index is down 0.70%. This gap suggests buyers are favoring specific discretionary consumer names rather than lifting the broader market.
The consumer discretionary sector itself ranks mid-pack today, coming in 5th out of 11 sectors, and while it has risen 7.02% over the past 30 days, it is down 0.69% over the past 90 days, making stock-specific leadership more important than sector-wide momentum in this volatile period.
