AMC Entertainment Holdings stock showed unusual strength. Why is AMC stock up today?
Treasury Buyback Plan Eases Market Pressure
The U.S. Treasury announced an unexpected expansion of its debt buyback program, committing to absorb up to $4 billion in long-term government bonds per operation starting September 9.
By stepping in to stabilize the bond market and push down long-term yields, the Treasury's move eased market interest rate pressure, fueling a risk-on rebound that lifted consumer discretionary stocks like AMC.
Second-Quarter Results Beat Expectations on July 20
AMC reported second-quarter financial results last month, with revenue beating expectations at $1.03 billion versus the Wall Street estimate of $1.01 billion.
CEO Adam Aron highlighted the fundamental recovery in theater attendance and concession spending during the conference call, stating: "We are delighted with the box office momentum we built in the second quarter, driven by blockbusters that drew many moviegoers back."
Aron added that the surge in admissions and high-margin food and beverage sales indicate that "moviegoers will enthusiastically return to our theaters when Hollywood's film slate is filled with compelling content, which will strengthen our operating cash flow as the release calendar returns to historical norms."
