On August 30, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent vowed at the start of the week to launch an "economic blitz" against Iran and its trading partners, in another attempt to end the war. But by the weekend, countries with ties to Iran had so far shrugged off the threat, and analysts were disappointed with the U.S. actions. As the week drew to a close, the U.S. announced plans to sanction the UAE-based branch of Egypt's Misr Bank.

Given Bessent's earlier warning that the world would "see major news of a financial institution being sanctioned before the end of the week," this move fell well short of expectations. Alex Zerden, a former U.S. Treasury official and founder of Capitol Peak Strategies, said: "The public actions taken by the U.S. Treasury this week did not match the prior hype. 'Operation Economic Exile' extends 47 years of restrictive economic measures against Iran but does not provide a clearer path for how this current campaign will achieve economic or military victory."
