Apple Inc. shares were roughly flat on Thursday as investors weighed broader market weakness. The Nasdaq fell 0.49%, and the S&P 500 declined 0.38%.

Market breadth also remained weak, with an advance/decline ratio of 0.6. Apple's relative stability suggests investors are holding positions rather than making new momentum bets.

Thursday's move appeared primarily tied to broader market positioning rather than company-specific catalysts. The energy sector rose 1.48%, while 7 of the 11 major sectors declined.

The defensive tone extended to major indices. The Russell 2000 fell 1.19%, and the Dow Jones declined 0.81%. The technology sector was roughly flat, ranking fourth among the 11 sectors.

Munster Sees Apple as Undervalued AI Investment Opportunity

Meanwhile, investors continue to assess Apple's artificial intelligence opportunity.

On Wednesday, Deepwater Asset Management managing partner Gene Munster told CNBC that Apple remains an undervalued AI opportunity. He said the company's more cautious approach and stronger safeguards could help differentiate it from competitors.

Munster called Apple "one of the most undervalued companies in big tech." He said Apple has "finally gotten Siri right" and believes the stock could be "re-rated" as Siri becomes the foundation for personalized AI.

Munster said testing the Siri beta has convinced him that Apple has made meaningful progress. Deepwater's research shows that less than 20% of U.S. iPhone users use Siri daily, leaving significant room for adoption growth.

He expects that as investor confidence in Apple's AI strategy grows, they will assign a higher valuation multiple to Apple over the next year, even if earnings growth remains modest.

Technical Analysis

Apple shares remain above key moving averages. The stock is about 0.2% above its 20-day simple moving average of $315.78 and 2.1% above its 50-day SMA of $309.96. It is also 12.5% above its 200-day SMA of $281.33.

The 20-day average remains above the 50-day average. Additionally, the 50-day average has stayed above the 200-day average since a golden cross formed in September 2025. These signals support a longer-term bullish trend.

The relative strength index stands at 53.73. This neutral reading indicates Apple is neither overbought nor oversold.

Traders may watch $335 as key resistance near the upper end of the recent range. Support sits around $300.50, near the psychologically important $300 level.

Analyst Outlook

Apple trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 36.3, reflecting a premium valuation. The stock holds a consensus Buy rating with an average price target of $329.53.

Jefferies downgraded Apple to Underperform on August 10 and cut its price target to $263.66. China Renaissance downgraded the stock to Hold on August 4 with a price target of $280. JPMorgan maintained an Overweight rating on July 31 but lowered its price target to $340.

Edge Ranking

Apple's Edge scorecard shows strong momentum and quality scores, but a weak value score.

Momentum scores 79.75, and quality scores 97.99. Growth is more moderate at 40.05. However, Apple's value score is just 4.8, highlighting its premium valuation.

Overall, the ranking points to a stock supported by momentum and business quality. But its valuation leaves less room for error in execution.

Top ETF Exposure

Apple holds a 9.96% weight in the Columbia Research Enhanced Core Premium Income ETF. It accounts for 9.83% of the iShares S&P 100 ETF and 9.57% of the Xtrackers Net Zero Pathway Paris Aligned U.S. Equity ETF.

Apple's large weight means inflows or outflows from these funds can translate into buying or selling pressure for the stock.

Price Action

AAPL price action: At Thursday's publication, Apple shares were down 0.02% at $316.78.
