Counterpoint Says Leasing Helps Support Sales and Premium Product Mix
Apple is shifting its device financing strategy toward leasing, as rising hardware costs and potential price increases make monthly affordability a greater focus.
Counterpoint Research analyst Maurice Klaehne said the new Apple Upgrade program helps protect device sales amid price increases while encouraging customers to choose higher-priced configurations.
The program, backed by Klarna Group plc, covers iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, and iPad. Customers can upgrade, buy out their current device, or return it at the end of the lease term.
Klaehne also views the program as a pathway to attract first-time iOS users and Android switchers, while potentially shortening upgrade cycles.
Klarna Partnership Limits Apple's Credit Risk Exposure
Klaehne highlighted another advantage for Apple: Klarna handles the financing relationship, allowing Apple to benefit from customer loyalty and device sales without carrying receivables or credit risk on its balance sheet.
He noted the timing is significant because memory shortages are pushing up DRAM and NAND prices, and Apple has raised prices across some of its product lines.
Klaehne sees the upcoming iPhone 18 cycle as a key test of whether leasing can help offset higher upfront prices and sustain demand.
Carriers scaling back phone promotions could also push consumers to view Apple Upgrade as an alternative payment option.
