AUD/USD came under mild pressure on Wednesday, trading around 0.71663. Despite a hot Australian consumer price index print, broad-based USD strength dominated FX flows, preventing the Aussie from drawing support from the firm inflation data.

**Inflation Beats Expectations, but the Boost Was Quickly Digested**

Australia's latest CPI eased to 4.2% year-on-year, but the details showed sticky inflation, reinforcing market expectations that the RBA will maintain its tightening stance. Earlier, RBA meeting minutes hinted the board was close to hiking, briefly pushing AUD/USD to around 0.7167. However, that tailwind was quickly overwhelmed by USD buying, and the Aussie gave back its post-data gains.

**USD Strength Takes the Lead**

US economic data was mixed, with the August consumer confidence index falling to a seven-month low of 89.4. Still, Boston Fed President Collins struck a hawkish tone, noting inflation remains elevated and the economy is running near trend. The dollar index firmed on policy expectations, putting broad pressure on G10 currencies. Market reports also noted that news of a US-Iran ceasefire deal briefly weighed on oil prices, indirectly dampening commodity-linked currency sentiment.

**Focus Shifts to Policy Path Divergence**

Money markets now price roughly 14 basis points of implied tightening for the RBA's December meeting, corresponding to about a 50% probability of a hike. ANZ analysts noted that if core inflation comes in as expected, the November meeting could become a "live" one, with both a hike and a hold requiring serious consideration. Near-term, AUD direction remains hostage to USD dynamics and the market's repricing of policy paths across both central banks.
