The Australian dollar stood out as the only G10 currency to post gains this week, supported by higher-than-expected inflation data and robust household spending, which boosted market expectations for the Reserve Bank of Australia to maintain a hawkish stance. However, ING analyst Francesco Pesole believes the RBA's decision to hold rates steady is constraining further short-term upside for the AUD/USD pair.

**Hawkish Tone vs. Market Pricing Gap**

The RBA kept its interest rate unchanged at 4.35% at its latest meeting but signaled a hawkish bias. Governor Bullock emphasized at the press conference that inflation risks are tilted to the upside and revealed that a rate hike was discussed during the meeting. This pushed Australian short-term government bond yields higher. Despite this, a gap remains between market pricing and the central bank's stance, with markets currently pricing in only modest rate cut possibilities for future meetings, contrasting with the RBA's tightening bias, making the Australian dollar more sensitive to upcoming inflation and employment data.

**Institution Maintains Year-End Bullish View but Warns of Short-Term Resistance**

ING's FX strategists expect no further rate hikes from the RBA this year but remain bullish on the Australian dollar's medium-term performance, maintaining a target for AUD/USD to rise toward 0.73 by year-end. However, the institution also notes that with the current policy rate unchanged, the Australian dollar's short-term upside against the U.S. dollar will be limited. At the time of writing, AUD/USD was trading near 0.71858, still some distance from the year-end target, with subsequent movements highly dependent on whether economic data can continue to support hawkish expectations.
