AUD/USD staged a rally-then-retreat move during Friday's intraday session, currently trading near 0.71597. The pair earlier rose to 0.7206, hitting its highest level since mid-May, but subsequently gave back gains on dollar strength, down about 0.30% on the day.

**Dollar Boosted by Hawkish Remarks and Inflation Data**

The main catalyst for dollar strength came from expectations around Federal Reserve Chair Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium, along with stubborn inflation data released earlier. Several Fed officials have recently delivered hawkish remarks, with Cleveland Fed President Hammack stating it is time to raise rates and warning that delaying action could bring greater pain. Meanwhile, the July U.S. PCE price index rose 3.7% year-over-year, above the 3.6% market expectation, reinforcing market bets on the Fed maintaining tightening policy. According to futures market pricing, as of Friday, the probability of the Fed raising rates by another 25 basis points before year-end stood at about 60%, providing solid support for the dollar.

**AUD Faces Resistance at Highs, Domestic Factors Still Supportive**

Despite the AUD pulling back from its intraday high, it remains near highs seen since early June. The Australian dollar had been supported by hot July domestic CPI data in Australia, which prompted money markets to actively price in expectations of a fourth rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia in 2026. However, against the backdrop of overall dollar strength, further upside for the AUD is temporarily limited, with markets closely watching whether Warsh's speech will release clearer policy signals.

**Markets Focus on Jackson Hole, Awaiting Direction**

Global FX market focus has locked onto the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium. Fed Chair Warsh is expected to deliver a keynote speech on Friday, with traders set to carefully parse his remarks to gauge the central bank's policy priorities between economic growth and inflation control. If Warsh reiterates a hawkish stance, the dollar could strengthen further, pressuring non-USD currencies like the AUD; conversely, if his tone leans cautious, the AUD could regain upward momentum.
