The Australian dollar posted notable gains against the US dollar on Wednesday amid a confluence of factors, trading near 0.71256, up more than 0.56% on the day. Despite hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes, US Treasury buyback operations weighed on the greenback, boosting a rebound in non-USD currencies such as the AUD.
**Treasury Buybacks Dominate FX Market, USD Under Pressure**
The US Treasury's bond buyback operations became the market focus of the day, absorbing market liquidity and putting broad pressure on the US dollar. Although the Fed's meeting minutes showed most officials saw upside risks to inflation, potentially requiring further monetary policy tightening, this hawkish signal failed to lift the dollar. Under the impact of the buyback operations, the US dollar index declined, providing upward momentum for the AUD.
**AUD Short-Term Path Still Constrained by Domestic Factors**
However, the AUD's prior downward pressure has not fully dissipated. Earlier data showed Australia's second-quarter core inflation gauge, the "trimmed mean," rose only 0.8% quarter-on-quarter, below the market expectation of 0.9%, with the annual pace also slowing to 3.6%. In response, market expectations for a near-term rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia cooled significantly, and the AUD/USD pair briefly fell 0.4% to $0.6946. Westpac Chief Economist Luci Ellis said that given inflation was more subdued than expected, the bank no longer anticipates a rate hike from the RBA this year.
**Policy Expectation Battle in Focus Ahead**
The AUD's current trajectory reflects a tug-of-war between external dollar weakness and cooling domestic rate-hike expectations. The Fed's hawkish stance contrasts with expectations that the RBA may hold steady, but short-term dollar liquidity shifts from Treasury buybacks are temporarily steering market direction. Investors should watch upcoming US economic data and Treasury yield trends to gauge the sustainability of the dollar's pullback.
