The baht climbed to a two-month high against the US dollar, driven by multiple factors. OCBC analysts noted that broad dollar weakness, falling international oil prices, strong electronics export performance, and gold-related capital inflows collectively provided upward momentum for the baht. Market reports indicate that high gold prices have prompted local gold traders to aggressively sell dollars to settle profits, which has become a notable force lifting the baht recently.

**Gold Trading Under Regulatory Scrutiny**

The rapid appreciation of the baht has drawn heightened vigilance from Thai financial regulators. According to reports, the Bank of Thailand is considering setting a "ceiling" on gold trading to prevent large-scale concentrated dollar selling from destabilizing the baht. Meanwhile, regulators plan to require major gold traders and online gold investment platforms to submit detailed transaction data to the central bank, aiming to strengthen capital flow monitoring. Thai central bank officials have previously expressed concerns that certain forward foreign exchange transactions by gold traders could exacerbate exchange rate volatility and have asked financial institutions to conduct stricter checks on such transactions.

**Economic Fundamentals and Policy Dilemma**

The strengthening baht is pressuring Thailand's export-oriented economy. Lavanya Venkateswaran, senior ASEAN economist at OCBC, stated that Thailand's economic growth momentum remains quite weak and, at least on the growth front, needs some additional support. Market expectations suggest the Bank of Thailand may cut interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting to address downside economic risks. However, the decision to cut rates involves a delicate balance with the exchange rate management goal of curbing the baht's excessive appreciation, posing a challenge for the central bank's policy choices.
