The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Baxter International has notified customers to correct certain convenience kits by removing recalled saline ampules manufactured by Huons Co., Ltd., which were initially recalled by Elevaris Medical Devices.
Corrective Actions and Usage Guidelines
The convenience kits contain various surgical instruments, dressings, and medication components designed for surgical procedures.
On August 10, Baxter sent letters to healthcare providers instructing them to stop using the specific saline ampules in affected kits.
Healthcare facilities must quarantine their inventory until receiving overlabeling stickers. Medical staff can safely use all other components in these surgical and procedural trays.
The company advises customers to label affected kits without covering necessary regulatory details.
After opening trays in a sterile environment, staff must immediately remove and dispose of the recalled ampules to maintain sterility of remaining items.
Potential Health Risks and Patient Monitoring
Patients may face exposure to endotoxins, microorganisms, or foreign particles.
These contaminants can trigger severe reactions, including infection, microthrombi, systemic inflammatory response, and organ failure. As of July 29, Baxter reported no deaths or serious injuries related to this defect.
Patients treated with affected ampules who remain asymptomatic require no specific follow-up.
Stock Performance and Technical Analysis
Baxter shares rose approximately 3% on Wednesday, leading gains among healthcare stocks. The Nasdaq fell 0.22%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.22%. The move extends the stock's recent rebound, suggesting sector rotation continues to support BDX.
Baxter trades 7.7% above its 20-day simple moving average of $172.90 and 8.6% above its 200-day simple moving average of $171.42. It is 16.5% above the 50-day simple moving average of $159.78 and 20% above the 100-day simple moving average of $155.12.
However, the relative strength index stands at 74.01. An RSI above 70 typically indicates overbought conditions, increasing the risk of a short-term pause or pullback.
Long-term technicals remain mixed. The stock formed a death cross in March when its 50-day simple moving average fell below the 200-day simple moving average. Baxter has since reclaimed both moving averages, but the bearish crossover has not yet reversed.
Resistance sits near $196, with support near $153.50.
