Coinbase Global Inc shares traded higher on Wednesday as the broader cryptocurrency market found its footing.
Coinbase Global stock was firmly higher. Why is COIN stock surging?
Bitcoin Stability Fuels Optimism
Bitcoin climbed near $68,500, finding support after recent selling pressure, with ETFs absorbing $486.85 million over the first two trading days of the week.
The rise in Bitcoin's price sparked retail and institutional trading activity, directly driving the high-margin trading volumes that underpin Coinbase's core revenue. Higher token prices also expand Coinbase's total custody assets, boosting its asset-based fee income.
As a high-beta proxy for the crypto market, COIN stock tends to move more sharply than Bitcoin itself, amplifying gains and losses in either direction.
Stablecoin Regulation and Revenue Tailwinds Beyond Bitcoin price stability, Coinbase is also benefiting from an evolving regulatory landscape. The Treasury proposed new rules on Monday for the GENIUS Act, the stablecoin framework enacted in July 2025.
The proposed rules require payment stablecoin issuers to obtain federal or state licenses starting January 18, 2027. Additionally, from July 18, 2028, it will be illegal for digital asset platforms to offer or sell payment stablecoins to Americans unless those stablecoins are issued by licensed issuers. The proposal also imposes strict due diligence obligations on exchanges listing stablecoins.
Given Coinbase's significant financial partnership with Circle, the creator of the USDC stablecoin, clearer federal regulation is seen as a major positive, potentially accelerating adoption by mainstream corporations and banks.
Furthermore, Coinbase generated approximately $324.6 million in USDC distribution costs in the second quarter alone, highlighting that stablecoins are providing a substantial non-trading revenue stream.
Adding to Wednesday's momentum, Coinbase officially launched direct trading between the Brazilian real and USDC on its Advanced platform, a targeted move to capture institutional trading volume in Latin America's largest market.
COIN Stock Surges Wednesday Morning COIN price action: Coinbase Global stock was up 12.20% at $164.07 at the time of Wednesday's data release.
