【Canada Advances Vancouver Port Expansion to Reduce Reliance on US Exports】
⑴ The Canadian federal government announced on October 30 that it has officially designated the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project at the Port of Vancouver as a national interest project, aiming to boost port throughput capacity, promote trade diversification, and reduce reliance on US exports.
⑵ According to a press release from Transport Canada issued the same day, the project plans to strengthen trade infrastructure and support the goal of doubling exports to non-US markets by 2035.
⑶ The project involves an investment of C$5.9 billion, approximately US$4.2 billion, to increase the Port of Vancouver's container throughput capacity by about 50%, adding 2.4 million containers of annual processing capacity and supporting up to C$100 billion in annual trade value.
⑷ Transport Canada stated that designating it as a national interest project will provide certainty for subsequent regulatory approvals, advancing the project's commercial operation date to 2035, up to four years earlier than originally planned.
