Canada heavy crude's discount to US oil prices hit its highest level since 2018, with the last time such a wide spread occurring when severe pipeline bottlenecks forced the Alberta government to impose production limits on top local crude producers. According to quotes from Modern Commodities and General Index, during the morning trading session on November 3, Western Canadian Select (WCS) traded in Alberta at a discount of $31.70 per barrel to the monthly average futures price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI), setting a record for the widest discount since November 2018. Additionally, the discount for another Canadian benchmark crude, Cold Lake, on the US Gulf Coast also rose to near an eight-year high of $23.10 per barrel. Such significant discounts are typically highly correlated with regional transportation constraints and inventory buildup at production sites, directly impacting the revenue and profits of Canadian crude producers, and may also prompt local authorities to introduce regulatory measures to balance supply, demand, and transportation conflicts.
