Coherent Corp. shares surged Thursday after Nvidia reported better-than-expected second-quarter results and issued upbeat guidance, reigniting investor enthusiasm for AI infrastructure stocks.

Nasdaq futures rose 0.9%, and S&P 500 futures gained 0.28%.

Given Coherent's exposure to AI and data center spending, the stock often trades like a momentum play. As a result, broader tech sector moves could amplify premarket trading swings in the shares.

Technical Analysis

Despite a recent pullback, Coherent remains in a long-term uptrend. The stock is trading 11.2% above its 200-day simple moving average of $272.01.

However, it remains 2.6% below its 20-day SMA and 6.5% below its 50-day SMA.

This pattern suggests the long-term trend is still bullish, but the short-term recovery is incomplete. The stock needs to reclaim its 20-day and 50-day moving averages to strengthen its rebound momentum.

Meanwhile, the Relative Strength Index stands at 46.34, indicating neutral momentum rather than overbought or oversold conditions.

The 20-day SMA also remains below the 50-day SMA, a short-term bearish signal. However, the 50-day SMA holds above the 200-day SMA, supporting the long-term bullish trend.

Resistance sits near $328, close to the 50-day moving average. Support is around $255, below the 200-day moving average. A break below that level could raise the risk of retesting July's lows.

Analyst Outlook

Coherent stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 71.4x, reflecting a valuation premium. The stock holds a consensus Buy rating, with analysts' average price target at $402.25.

Jefferies maintained a Buy rating on August 13 and raised its price target to $420. Morgan Stanley maintained an Overweight rating and raised its target to $375. B. Riley Securities maintained a Neutral rating and raised its target to $345.

Key ETF Holdings

Corgi Lithography & Photonics Semiconductor ETF holds a 3.76% weight in Coherent. Spear Alpha ETF holds a 7.86% weight, while NestYield Dynamic Income ETF holds a 4.92% weight.

Significant inflows or outflows from these funds could create additional buying or selling pressure on Coherent shares.

Price Action

Coherent shares rose 2.84% in premarket trading Thursday to $302.73.
