Cronos confirmed in a post-mortem report that the August 30 attack on lending platform Tectonic involved $120.4 million in borrowing activity. Validators made the "difficult decision" to roll back the chain's history, successfully recovering approximately $111.2 million (about 92% of the affected funds), while roughly $9.19 million had flowed out before the network pause and could not be recovered. The attacker exploited thin DEX liquidity within minutes to pump the price of Tectonic's token, TONIC, by roughly 100x, and borrowed $120.4 million across nine markets in a single transaction. Validators paused the network about two hours later, restoring the chain to the last block before the suspicious activity, with block production resuming approximately 11 hours after the attack. The rollback involved reversing 1 hour and 54 minutes of on-chain history, spanning 10,961 blocks, with all transactions in that window reversed, whether or not they were related to the attack. Cronos stated that the alternative was to restart the network without restoring the prior state, which would have left the stolen assets in the attacker's hands. This rollback follows Harmony's announcement of a similar plan, while Flow abandoned its rollback proposal in December last year due to community opposition. Cronos' validator set is capped at 100, enabling rapid coordination for the pause and restart, but also indicating that the network's finality in emergency situations depends on validator consensus.
