According to The New York Times, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao revealed in a recent interview that he was assigned to the low-security Lompoc II prison in California, which later also housed FTX founder SBF.

Before reporting to prison, Zhao assembled a team of advisors who taught him the subtle rules of prison cellblock politics. One advisor also corresponded with other inmates, who agreed to help Zhao adapt to prison life.

In August 2024, Zhao left Lompoc prison and was transferred to a halfway house. However, due to issues with his immigration status, he was forced to spend his final two weeks at a local prison, passing time in his cell with push-ups and sit-ups. On the day of his release, only 26 minutes elapsed between Zhao's release from custody and the takeoff of his private jet.
