The euro strengthened significantly against the dollar on Wednesday, briefly hitting its highest level since June, chiefly on the US Treasury's announcement it would increase buybacks of longer-dated government debt, which pushed Treasury yields lower and pressured the dollar. As of press time, EUR/USD was trading near 1.16584.

**US Treasury buyback news pressures the dollar**

The Treasury's move to increase buybacks of longer-dated government debt eased market concerns about long-end supply pressures, driving Treasury yields lower and in turn weakening the dollar's appeal. The dollar index remained soft after the announcement, with the euro, as the main counterpart currency, directly benefiting. Market reports showed the dollar was already under pressure from weak retail sales data earlier, and the buyback news further amplified its losses.

**Eurozone internal factors remain uncertain**

Despite the euro's short-term strength, the eurozone's own fundamentals are not broadly improving. Earlier data showed the eurozone manufacturing PMI flash reading fell to a four-month low, while Germany's ZEW economic sentiment index and IFO business climate index both missed expectations, pointing to weaker economic momentum. Additionally, European Central Bank concerns over a strong euro and itsish way of policy stance could still cap the euro's upside.

**Focus turns to rate spreads and policy divergence**

Some institutional analysis believes that policy differences between the Fed and the ECB remain a key variable for the euro. If US Treasury yields stabilize and rebound later amid widening US-Europe yield spreads, the euro may face giving-back pressure. Conversely, if the Fed signals less hawkishness than expected, the euro could see further rebound potential again. In the near term, the euro's durability around its June highs effectively still depends on the direction of US Treasury yields and the dollar index.
