The euro traded flat against the yen on Friday, with mixed factors leaving the pair consolidating narrowly around the 185.72 level. Earlier data showed firm Japanese inflation, reinforcing market expectations that the Bank of Japan may further adjust its monetary policy and providing support for the yen. However, subsequently released eurozone and German PMI data beat expectations, showing resilience in European economic activity and driving a rebound in euro buying, which largely offset the yen's earlier gains.

Japanese inflation supports the yen

Latest data indicated sustained price pressures in Japan, giving the yen a boost during the Asian session. Market reports suggested that stronger inflation could prompt Japanese policymakers to reassess the need for the current ultra-loose policy stance. However, yen gains were relatively restrained, as Japanese officials had previously noted that rising long-term interest rates could strain fiscal conditions, a remark that limited further upside for the yen.

European PMI lifts the euro

Entering the European session, PMI activity indicators from the eurozone and Germany came in better than market expectations, easing investor concerns over Europe's economic outlook. According to analysis from Far Eastern International Bank, the PMI improvement spurred euro gains, providing rebound momentum for the euro-yen pair. The euro's resilience saw the pair quickly recover after brief pressure, eventually returning to around the flat line.

Range-bound tug-of-war persists

The euro-yen pair currently lacks a clear direction, with the market weighing policy outlooks and fundamental divergences between the two regions. On one hand, Japanese inflation data has made yen bears cautious; on the other, improved European economic data offers underlying support for the euro. In the near term, the pair may continue to fluctuate within its current range, awaiting further catalysts to break the balance.
