Exxon Mobil Corporation shares rose about 2% on Tuesday, as energy stocks outperformed amid broader market weakness. The Nasdaq fell 1.49%, and the S&P 500 declined 0.53%.

Energy stocks gained 1.51% on Tuesday, making it one of the best-performing sectors in the market. In contrast, the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund fell 2.57%.

Exxon Mobil benefited from this sector rotation. The stock also maintained a long-term uptrend, which may attract buyers during broader market declines.

Despite weakness in major indices, market breadth remained positive. Eight of 11 sectors advanced, with an advance/decline ratio of 2.7.

Exxon Mobil Advances Rovuma LNG Project

Separately, Exxon Mobil said Tuesday that its Mozambique subsidiary and Area 4 partners awarded approximately $1.1 billion in early investment contracts for Phase 1 of the Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique.

The contracts cover subsea production systems, large-bore production valves, offshore pipelines, and early construction work. These contracts will enable suppliers to begin manufacturing equipment with long production and delivery lead times.

This move advances the Rovuma LNG project toward a final investment decision. The project includes offshore gas development and an onshore LNG facility, with a planned annual capacity of 18.6 million tons.

Technical Analysis

Exxon Mobil trades about 5.1% above its 20-day simple moving average of $156.91. It is also 16.3% above its 200-day simple moving average of $141.79.

The 20-day simple moving average remains above the 50-day simple moving average. Additionally, following a "golden cross" formed in August 2025, the 50-day simple moving average remains above the 200-day simple moving average.

However, momentum appears overstretched. The relative strength index stands at 70.28. An RSI above 70 may signal overbought conditions, increasing the risk of a pullback or consolidation.

Resistance sits near $176.50, close to the 52-week high of $176.41. Support is near $149, close to the 50-day simple moving average of $148.06.

Exxon Mobil Analyst Outlook

The stock holds a consensus Buy rating with an average price target of $168.33.

Barclays maintained an Overweight rating on Monday, cutting its price target to $177. TD Cowen maintained a Buy rating on August 7, raising its price target to $168. Freedom Broker upgraded Exxon Mobil to Hold on August 4, raising its price target to $142.

Edge Scores

The Edge scorecard shows strong momentum and value scores for Exxon Mobil.

Momentum scores 76.03, and value scores 77.78. The growth score is relatively moderate at 57.19.

Overall, these scores point to strong price momentum and supportive valuation characteristics. However, the elevated RSI and the stock's distance above its moving averages suggest investors may need to watch for near-term volatility.

Exxon Mobil Key ETF Exposure

Exxon Mobil holds a 9.42% weight in the iShares North American Natural Resources ETF. It also accounts for 7.81% of the iShares Core High Dividend ETF and 6.74% of the GQG U.S. Equity ETF.

These sizable weights may increase the stock's exposure to fund inflows and outflows.
