The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved a modular premarket approval application pathway for FemBloc, a non-surgical permanent contraception technology.
Femasys Inc. announced this regulatory milestone for its investigational contraceptive device.
Office-Based Alternative to Surgical Sterilization
FemBloc is a first-of-its-kind permanent contraception option, specifically designed for use in a standard obstetrics and gynecology office setting. During the procedure, physicians use a patented delivery system to place a proprietary polymer blend directly into both fallopian tubes.
After insertion, the polymer safely degrades and promotes the growth of natural scar tissue. This tissue eventually forms a permanent blockage, effectively occluding the fallopian tubes and preventing pregnancy.
Unlike traditional surgical sterilization methods, the FemBloc procedure requires no anesthesia, surgical incisions, or postoperative recovery time.
This non-surgical approach offers women a highly convenient and more affordable contraception option.
Additionally, the in-office treatment allows patients to completely avoid the various health complications and risks typically associated with invasive procedures.
Kathy Lee-Sepsick, CEO and founder of Femasys, stated: "FDA approval of the modular PMA pathway provides a clear and efficient framework for advancing FemBloc toward U.S. approval, allowing key sections of the submission to be reviewed by the FDA ahead of the final clinical data."
