Lead: The US Dollar Index hovered around 98.89 on Thursday, edging higher slowly but still failing to breach the 100.00 round figure, with hawkish remarks from the St. Louis Federal Reserve continuing to underpin the greenback.

Hawkish rhetoric and policy expectations provide support: The hawkish stance from St. Louis Fed officials has reinforced market expectations that the Fed will maintain a tightening bias, serving as the key sentiment foundation for the dollar's gradual ascent this week. Although the Dollar Index has yet to reclaim the psychological level, it has also drawn some bid support as a safe-haven asset amid geopolitical uncertainties and fluctuating risk sentiment.

PMI data becomes key for near-term direction: The upcoming flash PMI readings from major global economies will be a critical test of whether dollar momentum can be sustained. If US PMI figures remain in expansion and outperform rival economies such as the Eurozone, it would further strengthen the short-term trading logic of "US economic exceptionalism," driving the dollar to extend its current resilience. According to previously released data, the US July Markit Manufacturing PMI final reading came in at 53.9, indicating the manufacturing sector remains in expansion territory—itself part of the dollar's underlying strength.

Risk sentiment disturbances: Recent oil prices breaking through cyclical highs and a sharp surge in the volatility index (VIX) suggest that "black swan" risk factors (such as setbacks in Middle East negotiations and soaring energy prices) are emerging. In this environment, the dollar's movement is not solely driven by rate differentials; its safe-haven appeal may also be episodically activated, curbing overly aggressive one-sided short positions.
