On September 08, two suspects in Mexico are accused of killing four people, with the alleged motive being the search for a cold wallet reportedly holding millions of dollars in Bitcoin. The two will appear in court on Wednesday, where a judge will decide whether there is sufficient evidence to continue criminal proceedings. Prosecutors said that if convicted, the suspects could face 25 to 70 years in prison per victim case.
The case comes amid a continued rise in violent robberies targeting cryptocurrency holders. CertiK data shows that in the first half of 2026, publicly reported "wrench attacks" globally reached 52 cases, up 33.3% year-over-year; among these, home invasions targeting crypto holders were 20 cases, significantly higher than the1 case reported in the same period last year. Chainalysis estimates that crypto assets losses from such attacks exceeded $30 million in the first half of 2026.
