On September 7, Galaxy Research Head Alex Thorn (@intangiblecoins) disclosed that the Liquid Network discovered a major security vulnerability, which a white hat hacker exploited to obtain approximately 4,000 BTC. The hacker communicated with Blockstream via Bitcoin on-chain OP_RETURN messages and PGP-encrypted text, and sent 1,000 satoshis to a federated wallet as a signal, indicating they would return "most" of the funds after the vulnerability is fixed.
The hacker explicitly required Blockstream to prioritize fixing the vulnerability and ensure all nodes complete updates, after which the funds would be securely transferred. Technical details have been sent to Blockstream via PGP encryption, readable only by them.
