The Hungarian central bank's (MNB) latest rate decision and policy communication provided a mild boost to the forint. Commerzbank analyst Tatha Ghose noted in a report that after cutting its benchmark rate to 5.50%, the MNB did not pre-commit to further easing, instead stating that September's inflation report would be a key guide for future policy. This cautious tone was interpreted by the foreign exchange market as a relatively positive signal.

**Policy Signals Underpin Short-Term Exchange Rate**

The MNB's post-meeting statement emphasized that rate hikes by major global central banks could limit its room for further easing, which alleviated market concerns about a rapid narrowing of Hungary's interest rate advantage. Ghose concluded that the MNB's communication strategy provided "slight support" for the forint. Market sources indicated that with policymakers reiterating the need for "patience and caution" in response to persistent inflation risks, the forint exchange rate found temporary stability. The dollar was trading against the forint around 309.41021.

**Inflation Outlook Remains the Core Variable**

Policymakers have closely tied their next steps to upcoming inflation data, highlighting the high uncertainty surrounding the price outlook. Although headline inflation has shown signs of improvement recently, some analysts point out that this moderation partly stems from government-imposed administrative price controls, and underlying inflationary pressures have not fully subsided. Should future data show inflation stalling or even rebounding, the MNB's currently reserved policy flexibility could be tested, subsequently impacting the forint's trajectory.

**External Risks Constrain Longer-Term Performance**

Despite short-term support, the forint faces multiple external challenges. Commerzbank had previously warned that Hungary's economy is highly sensitive to shifts in global risk sentiment. Geopolitical tensions, energy price volatility, and the state of relations with the European Union could all exacerbate forint fluctuations. If global risk aversion intensifies, the MNB's apparent reluctance to signal clear rate hikes could leave the forint under pressure over a longer cycle.
