Gold prices in India came under pressure on Tuesday. According to data compiled by FXStreet, Indian gold prices retreated from the previous trading day's levels, extending the recent range-bound pattern. As of press time, international spot gold was quoted at $4,626.47 per ounce, providing a key reference for domestic market pricing.

**Indian domestic gold prices follow international weakness**

Data shows that gold prices in India, denominated in rupees, declined. Specifically, the price per gram of gold fell from 11,630.05 Indian rupees to 11,532.91 Indian rupees; on a tola basis, the price also slipped from 135,650.60 Indian rupees to 134,518.20 Indian rupees. This movement broadly aligns with the intraday direction of international gold prices, reflecting the direct transmission effect of global benchmark prices on India's local market.

**Macro factors and central bank buying create a tug-of-war**

The gold market has recently been influenced by a confluence of factors. On one hand, cooling U.S. inflation data—such as the narrowing year-on-year increase in the August Producer Price Index—has strengthened expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts, which typically supports gold as a non-yielding asset. On the other hand, data from the World Gold Council shows that global central banks continue to increase their gold reserves, with net purchases reaching 20 tonnes in May, indicating long-term allocation demand from official institutions. These structural bullish factors are competing with short-term profit-taking, leading to a seesaw pattern in gold prices.

**Market awaits further policy signals**

Despite Tuesday's decline in Indian domestic gold prices, they remain near historically elevated levels. Investors are closely monitoring upcoming U.S. economic data and remarks from Federal Reserve officials to gauge the future interest rate path. Any signals indicating economic weakness or increased urgency for rate cuts could reignite safe-haven buying in gold and influence price trends in major consumer markets such as India.
