Bank Indonesia (BI) kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 5.75% at its August policy meeting, in line with market expectations. The move prioritizes ensuring rupiah exchange-rate stability and the health of the macro-financial system, rather than directly stimulating economic growth. UOB economist Enrico Tanuwidjaja noted that the decision reflects the central bank's firm commitment to stability as its core focus.

**Stability Intent Dominates Decision**

The Indonesian rupiah has recently faced significant depreciation pressure, at one point hitting a record low, drawing widespread market attention. Against this backdrop, Indonesian finance ministry and central bank officials had previously made multiple public commitments to step up efforts to stabilize the exchange rate and attract capital inflows. The decision to hold rates steady is a clear signal that the central bank is allowing earlier tightening measures to continue transmitting and to consolidate confidence in the local currency. Following the rate decision, the rupiah maintained its earlier gains against the U.S. dollar.

**Hawkish Pause Signal**

Despite pausing rate hikes, the central bank's policy stance has not shifted toward easing. UOB's Global Economics & Markets Research team analyzed that the move should be viewed as a "hawkish hold." The team expects that BI's tightening cycle may not yet be over, with room for further rate increases through the end of 2026 to address external uncertainties and exchange-rate volatility risks. As of press time, the U.S. dollar was trading at 17797.56768 against the Indonesian rupiah, with markets continuing to monitor the central bank's subsequent intervention intensity and policy guidance.
