Institutional investors increased their stakes in electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive Inc. by more than 70 million shares in the second quarter of 2026.

Amazon, Uber Among Participants

According to a Tuesday report from Electric Vehicles, 417 institutional holders collectively added 106,424,812 Rivian shares, while 318 investors reduced their positions by 31,005,657 shares. 85 investors exited their positions in the automaker entirely, releasing 4.9 million shares, the report said.

Uber Technologies Inc., which has a $1.25 billion partnership with Rivian to develop and deploy autonomous robotaxis, established a new position of 19,553,911 shares worth just over $289 million. Overall, Rivian has 941 institutional holders, including Amazon.com Inc., which holds 158,363,834 shares valued at approximately $2.3 billion.

Investment firm D.E. Shaw purchased 12,203,342 shares, a 141% increase in the second quarter. BlackRock Inc. also added 2,448,064 shares during the quarter. Notably, German automotive giant Volkswagen Group completed a $1 billion investment in the automaker earlier this year.

Gary Black Backs Rivian

The Future Fund LLC investor Gary Black voiced support for the launch of Rivian's R2 crossover SUV, stating the vehicle will significantly expand the automaker's total addressable market. Rivian has priced the standard R2 starting at $45,000.

Meanwhile, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said on the automaker's second-quarter earnings call that Chinese automakers will find it difficult to compete due to cost structure advantages and government support.

Rivian Begins E-Bike Deliveries

Rivian recently reportedly began delivering TM-B e-bikes manufactured by Also Inc., which was spun off from Rivian after months of delays and customer dissatisfaction. The spinoff previously achieved a $1 billion valuation through a $200 million funding round led by Greenoaks Capital. Edge Rankings shows Rivian offers satisfactory momentum but fails to provide favorable price trends in the short, medium, and long term.

Price Action: Rivian Automotive shares rose 0.54% to $14.86 in premarket trading Wednesday.
