Iran mocks Canada for backing Trump's Hormuz move, warns of economic war retaliation

Iran criticized Canada for supporting US military action in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing it of yielding to intimidation and appeasing a "bullying neighbor."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei posted on X on Monday, characterizing Canada's stance as "strategic confusion and submission to intimidation."

Baghaei was referring to a recent post by President Donald Trump, who shared a map on Truth Social showing the US flag covering most of North America, including Canada and Mexico, as well as Greenland, Iceland, Cuba, Jamaica, and other Caribbean islands. Baghaei criticized Canada for appeasing the US on the same day Trump displayed "blatant contempt for Canadian sovereignty and independence."

"On the very day the US president showed blatant contempt for Canadian sovereignty and independence by depicting the entire country as part of the US, Canada's foreign and finance ministers chose to further appease their bullying neighbor—this time targeting Iran..." Baghaei wrote on September 7, 2026.

The Iranian spokesman questioned Canada's credibility as a defender of "peace and security," "freedom of navigation," and "international law," while simultaneously supporting US military aggression. He warned that Canada's decision would not shield it from "US bullying and aggression."

He further challenged why Canada would support Washington despite knowing its "perfidy" and that "America's signature is written in pencil."

Canada condemns Iran, South Korea weighs military action

On August 31, the EU backed efforts to contain Tehran's "destabilizing activities" and restart peace talks, including through the US-led "economic orphan initiative" aimed at intensifying economic pressure on Iran. The EU's endorsement came as G20 finance ministers and central bank governors met in Asheville, North Carolina.

Earlier, Iran warned South Korea against participating in US military operations in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, saying such involvement would carry "serious consequences."

According to reports, Seoul is considering a range of potential military contributions to secure this strategic waterway, including combat, non-combat, and search operations.

US-Iran tensions escalate

According to Reuters, on Tuesday, Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi forces attacked energy facilities and cities belonging to US ally Saudi Arabia, leaving more than 70 people injured. Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary said: "In recent days, Washington has received a clear warning from Iran's new missiles. The economic war will be met with a response spanning a maritime exclusion zone from the Persian Gulf to the blockade perimeter."

Iran and Oman are close to reaching an agreement to establish a temporary safe shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran plans to set up a restricted zone barring unauthorized vessel passage.
