【Lloyd's List: US Diesel Export Restrictions Could Reshape Tanker Routes and Vessel Demand】

(1) Lloyd's List, a leading maritime intelligence agency, notes that US seaborne diesel and diesel-type product exports average about 1.4 million barrels per day this year, accounting for roughly 18% of global seaborne diesel trade.

(2) If the US restricts diesel exports, the most direct impact would be reduced cargo volumes for MR product tankers shipping diesel from the US to Latin America and Europe, potentially pushing down freight rates on Atlantic routes.

(3) On the other hand, Europe and Latin America would need to source alternative diesel from the Middle East or Asia, involving longer shipping distances, which could increase demand for larger product tankers such as LR2s, potentially benefiting freight rates on long-haul Pacific-to-Atlantic routes.

(4) For crude carriers, if US refineries reduce processing due to restricted diesel exports, more US crude could shift toward exports, thereby increasing demand for Suezmax and Aframax tanker transportation.

(5) Meanwhile, if Asian diesel prices rise significantly, it could also enhance importers' ability to pay higher VLCC freight rates.

(6) However, whether Asia can supply enough diesel to fill the US supply gap remains a key variable.
