OCBC strategists Shen Muxiang and Christopher Wong believe the Malaysian ringgit remains relatively well supported. The support comes mainly from two factors: a generally softer US dollar and solid domestic fundamentals in Malaysia. This has enabled the ringgit to show a degree of resilience among Asian currencies.
**Domestic Data Provides a Buffer**
Despite external uncertainties, Malaysia's status as a net exporter of commodities provides fundamental support for the ringgit. OCBC analysts emphasize that supportive domestic data is a key source of the ringgit's resilience. However, the bank has previously noted that the ringgit is sensitive to global economic growth, risk sentiment, and portfolio flows, and may still face downward pressure in a broader risk-off environment.
**External Variables Still Dominate Short-Term Direction**
The trajectory of the US dollar remains the core external variable influencing the ringgit's short-term fluctuations. OCBC points out that a softer dollar environment is conducive to the ringgit maintaining relative strength. However, markets should remain vigilant to disruptions from shifts in Federal Reserve policy expectations. The bank has previously mentioned that Fed-led hawkish repricing could push US Treasury yields higher, thereby exerting pressure on the ringgit. In contrast, more managed currencies such as the Singapore dollar and the Chinese yuan may be less affected, but they cannot be entirely immune either.
