Mastercard shares rose against Friday's broad market selloff, with Wall Street analysts raising price targets on stronger growth prospects into 2027 despite cash flow concerns.

The payments giant outperformed the Nasdaq Composite, which plunged 2.99%, and the S&P 500, which fell 1.46%. Investors are weighing accelerating U.S. payment volumes, expansion of value-added services, and emerging opportunities in AI-driven commerce.

KeyBanc Capital Markets and BofA Securities both raised their price targets following Mastercard's third-quarter results, though BofA flagged concerns about the company's ability to convert stronger earnings into cash.

According to BofA, Mastercard's third-quarter revenue grew 14%, while value-added services revenue rose 19%. These services include fraud prevention, cybersecurity, and marketing tools.

KeyBanc Sees Stronger Growth Ahead

KeyBanc analyst Andrew Schmidt said Thursday that strong execution, pricing power, and value-added services support a clearer growth outlook for 2027.

Schmidt expects cross-border travel spending to improve as new client momentum builds and the company gradually overcomes challenges related to the Middle East region and portfolio mix shifts.

He described Mastercard's fourth-quarter 2026 outlook as "cautious, and a favorable launchpad into 2027."

Schmidt also highlighted agentic commerce, digital assets, cybersecurity, and commercial payments as growth drivers.

He expects Mastercard to deliver mid-to-high double-digit earnings per share growth.

KeyBanc maintained its Overweight rating and raised its price target from $722 to $735.

BofA Warns on Cash Flow Issues

BofA said Friday that investors are increasingly focused on the quality of Mastercard's growth.

The firm wrote: "The debate is increasingly centered on the composition and quality of growth."

U.S. swipe volume growth accelerated to 9% in October from 7% in the third quarter, while cross-border volume growth slowed to 10% from 11%.

However, despite stronger earnings, cash conversion weakened. BofA attributed the decline to higher customer incentive spending, litigation costs, and the timing of customer settlements.

BofA wrote: "We remain constructive on the diversified growth engine while monitoring whether stronger earnings translate into cash."

The firm maintained its Buy rating and raised its price target from $735 to $775, based on a 29x multiple on its forward 12-month EPS estimate.

MA stock movement: As of Friday's writing, Mastercard shares were up 0.12% at $636.48.
