MicroStrategy outperformed Bitcoin over five trading sessions—MicroStrategy shares rose 27%, while Bitcoin gained 19% over the same period.
MicroStrategy Bitcoin Profits Surge
MicroStrategy's recent upward momentum is supported by its massive Bitcoin holdings. As of Friday, the company held $1.4 billion in unrealized gains following Bitcoin's surge.
This marks a significant turnaround for MicroStrategy, which had faced $13 billion in unrealized losses when Bitcoin fell to its July low of $58,000. The company holds 840,447 Bitcoin at an average purchase price of $75,385 per coin, and manages its assets by strategically selling portions of its Bitcoin while building a substantial dollar reserve.
This reserve can cover 2.8 years of dividend payments and other obligations. MicroStrategy is also actively advancing the restoration of its perpetual preferred stock to its $100 par value, having deployed over one-third of its $1 billion buyback authorization in recent weeks.
A broader recovery in the digital credit market alongside Bitcoin could provide additional tailwinds for MicroStrategy. MicroStrategy's Bitcoin profits highlight its strategic position in the market.
Bitcoin Short Squeeze Fuels Rally
Bitcoin's recent breakout, with prices climbing to approximately $72,500, was driven by a $500 million short squeeze. This event marks Bitcoin's strongest volatility-adjusted breakout since October 2023.
Glassnode co-founder Rafael Schultze-Kraft noted that historically, such breakouts often precede gains of nearly 85% within six months, although prediction markets indicate traders remain cautious. Earlier, the U.S. Treasury announced an expansion of long-dated bond buybacks, briefly pushing yields lower and boosting risk assets.
MicroStrategy and Coinbase Global, Inc. also posted gains during this period. The Bitcoin short squeeze highlights the volatility of the cryptocurrency market.
Technical Analysis
MicroStrategy is currently on a winning streak, adding approximately $11.92 billion in market capitalization over about three trading sessions. The stock trades 19.41% above its 50-day simple moving average of $99.78, indicating strong upward momentum.
However, it remains 17.23% below its 200-day simple moving average of $143.95, reflecting longer-term challenges. Despite these challenges, MicroStrategy's recent performance suggests potential for sustained growth.
