Strategy Inc. shares surged Wednesday amid a broader cryptocurrency rally, as falling U.S. Treasury yields boosted investor appetite for risk assets, while optimism grew over President Trump's upcoming White House meeting with crypto executives.
MicroStrategy stock charged forward with explosive momentum. What's driving MSTR shares higher?
Treasury Bond Buyback Program Pushes Yields Lower and Boosts Crypto
Today's rally stems from the Treasury Department's move to expand its bond buyback program, doubling the minimum size of each long-dated repurchase operation to $4 billion starting in September.
Buybacks work by having the government repurchase older bonds that trade less actively than newly issued ones, funding these purchases with the short-term borrowing it already relies on. The net effect is that more debt is pushed into short-term bills while fewer long-dated bonds remain in investors' hands, a shift that tends to drag long-term yields lower.
That's essentially what happened this week. The 30-year yield, after hitting its highest level since 2007 on Tuesday, pulled back to just above 5.2%, while the 10-year yield eased to near 4.65%. The dollar weakened about 0.8% on the news.
The combination of a softer dollar and falling yields often drives capital elsewhere in search of higher returns, with crypto typically among the first beneficiaries. Part of this reaction also stems from traders' interpretation of the move itself: many view the expanded buybacks as a watered-down version of quantitative easing, essentially signaling the Fed is handcuffed in keeping monetary policy tight. Historically, that has been fertile ground for sharp Bitcoin rallies.
Crypto price action quickly confirmed this thesis. Bitcoin rose 6% on the day, Ethereum outpaced it with an 8% gain, Solana climbed 7%, and XRP added 4%.
Trump White House Crypto Meeting Adds Optimism
Another news thread from Washington fueled the rally. A planned SEC meeting from last Friday on potential regulatory relief for digital assets fell apart at the last minute, with the agency canceling without rescheduling.
Trump almost immediately filled that void, scheduling his own White House meeting for Wednesday, inviting crypto executives from across the country and planning to join the conversation himself—a move Milk Road analyst John Gillan described as evidence the administration wants to negotiate on the CLARITY Act rather than let the SEC resolve the issue through regulation alone.
