Nike Inc shares fell on Tuesday, dragged down by weak results from Dick's Sporting Goods. The retailer reported lower-than-expected second-quarter earnings and cited a challenging market environment for athletic footwear and apparel.

Nike stock faces downward pressure. What is pushing NKE shares lower?

Dick's Cuts Guidance, Foot Locker Reversal

Dick's Sporting Goods Inc shares fell more than 28% on Tuesday after management slashed full-year profit guidance, mainly due to a reversal at Foot Locker. Dick's acquired the athletic footwear chain for $2.5 billion less than 12 months ago.

Foot Locker posted a segment loss of $31.9 million in the quarter, a stark contrast to the $110 million to $150 million annual profit management had guided just three months earlier. The chain's comparable sales declined 3.6%, versus a 0.6% increase in the prior quarter. Executive Chairman Ed Stack cited a more promotional retail environment and Foot Locker's heavy exposure to new sneaker launches, retro styles, and older inventory as key factors behind the weak performance.

Dick's own core business remained healthy in the same quarter, with comparable sales up 4.9%, suggesting the weakness reflects issues at Foot Locker and in the athletic footwear category rather than broader consumer struggles.

Nike shares fell alongside Dick's as investors weighed whether the same pressures weighing on Foot Locker's sneaker business are also impacting the broader athletic apparel and footwear brand landscape.

Nike Chart Remains in Long-Term Downtrend

Nike's decline today adds to a long-standing bearish technical setup. The stock has lost nearly half its value over the past year and currently trades about 25% below its 200-day moving average of $52.40, confirming the broader trend remains lower. The stock also sits roughly 3.5% below its 20-day moving average of $41.26 and about 6% below its 50-day moving average of $42.29, leaving any short-term bounce vulnerable to renewed selling.

Moving average alignment remains bearish: the 20-day is below the 50-day, and the death cross formed in November 2025 remains unresolved. Until Nike can reclaim and hold above its key moving averages, this pattern tends to weigh on sustained rallies. Momentum indicators paint a similarly cautious picture, with the MACD line below the signal line and a negative histogram—a setup generally favoring sellers unless buying interest re-emerges.

Watch the $45 level to the upside, a round-number zone where previous bounces have faded. To the downside, $39 sits just above the 52-week low of $38.86, a level that will tell traders whether the bottom is holding or giving way.

NKE Stock Declines

NKE price action: Nike shares were down 2.55% at $39.71 at the time of writing on Tuesday. The stock is trading near its 52-week low of $38.86.
