Nvidia's reported $13 billion acquisition of Hugging Face could give the chipmaker deeper control over how AI models are discovered, developed, and deployed across the ecosystem, according to reports.

Shah Sees Hugging Face Expanding Nvidia's AI Reach

Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah said Thursday that the potential acquisition represents a broader horizontal integration strategy for Nvidia.

Hugging Face has become a core platform where developers publish, rank, fine-tune, and deploy AI models.

Shah believes owning the platform could give Nvidia earlier insight into which models, architectures, compression techniques, and agent frameworks are gaining traction, allowing it to get ahead before those demands translate into the chip market.

He said this information could help Nvidia optimize its compilers, runtimes, and future systems, while attracting more workloads to its chips, software, and infrastructure.

Open-Source Models and Physical AI Could Solidify Nvidia's Position

Shah sees open-source models as a key motivation behind the potential acquisition.

While closed-source AI labs are increasingly developing their own chips, Nvidia serves a much broader range of models and could leverage Hugging Face to make open-source model deployment on its hardware faster and more efficient.

He also highlighted robotics and world models as rapidly growing areas on Hugging Face.

Shah believes Nvidia could use the platform to strengthen the distribution of its physical AI technologies.

Neutrality Remains a Key Risk

Shah said Hugging Face's value largely depends on maintaining neutrality, as major AI labs, startups, and Nvidia's hardware competitors all publish models on the platform.

He warned that if developers begin to perceive the platform as too tightly tied to Nvidia or CUDA, it could lose value.

In his view, the deal would work best if Nvidia keeps Hugging Face open to competitors while leveraging its broad developer influence to encourage more open-source models, AI agents, and robotics workloads to run on Nvidia systems.

NVDA stock movement: In Friday's pre-market trading, Nvidia shares fell 0.04% to $227.89.
