Nvidia Corp. will report fiscal second-quarter results after the U.S. market close next Wednesday, as the chipmaker's high-profile AI-driven rally hits a stall.
Nvidia stock is a hot topic. View charts and price action here.
According to Bespoke Investment Group, Nvidia shares have surged from roughly $11 in late 2022 to about $216 today, a gain of nearly 1,700% since the November 2022 launch of ChatGPT sparked the AI boom.
That rally ranks among the strongest multi-year advances for large-cap stocks in recent market history, and despite a sluggish past year, the long-term chart maintains a clear uptrend.
Bespoke highlighted the dramatic scale of the fundamental shift. Quarterly revenue has surged since late 2022, beating Wall Street consensus estimates by wide margins in nearly every quarter. Few companies have seen fundamentals keep pace with their stock rally the way Nvidia has.
## King of the Triple Beat
Nvidia has become what Bespoke calls the "King of the Triple Beat"—a company that consistently beats both earnings and revenue estimates while also raising guidance.
Across 20 quarters of earnings over the past five years, the chipmaker has delivered 14 triple beats, including three consecutive quarters heading into next Wednesday's release.
The problem: Nvidia's triple beat no longer guarantees a stock gain. Shares closed lower after each of the last three beat-and-raise reports, suggesting investors have priced in near-perfect execution and now demand more.
## High Expectations
Nvidia investors increasingly want confirmation that AI demand far exceeds the current cycle, while also seeking clarity on margins amid intensifying competition from custom chips and threats from rival chipmakers.
Next Wednesday's earnings will test whether Nvidia can finally break this pattern. If a fourth consecutive triple beat meets another selloff, it will reinforce the view that the stock has entered a "prove it" phase, where even flawless numbers can't overcome investors' rising bar.
Nvidia stock performance: Based on Friday's close data, Nvidia shares fell 0.47% to $215.89.
