Palantir Technologies Inc. shares moved lower on Tuesday, even as Truist Securities reiterated its Buy rating and $223 price target on the stock. Here's what you need to know.
Palantir Technologies shares are facing resistance. What's dragging PLTR stock down?
Truist Remains Bullish on Palantir's Forward-Deployed Engineer Advantage
Truist maintained its Buy rating and $223 target on Palantir, aligning with nearly two dozen other analysts who have recently raised their earnings estimates for the company.
To support its view, the firm hosted JC Christian, who runs an AI-focused recruiting business, on a client call centered on a simple premise: elite forward-deployed engineers are scarcer than the chips or data center capacity everyone else is focused on, according to Investing.com.
Christian's team spent six months digging into the issue, speaking with over 250 executives and reviewing the backgrounds of more than 300 professionals working in AI and forward-deployed roles. Based on that work, Truist argues Palantir is in an unusually strong position because the company essentially invented the forward-deployed engineer role and has trained four-fifths of the top engineers currently working in it.
Palantir's Chart Shows Pullback After Extended Rally
Despite Truist's bullish stance, Palantir's technicals point to a stock that has risen too far for recent trends to sustain. Shares remain about 6.7% above the 20-day moving average of $161.96 and roughly 22.9% above the 50-day average of $140.73, an extension that often triggers pullbacks even within a broader uptrend. The longer-term picture is more mixed, with the 50-day average still below the 200-day average following a death cross in February, indicating the larger trend has only recently shifted more positively.
Momentum offers a clearer near-term signal. The MACD line sits below its signal line with a negative histogram, pointing to cooling upside pressure relative to the stock's prior advance, a pattern that typically suggests buyers are losing control unless the stock can re-accelerate.
Traders are watching $187.50 as resistance, a level where rebounds have tended to stall after sharp rises, and $148 as support, an area closer to the stock's medium-term trend where buyers have stepped in. A move back to the stock's 52-week high of $207.52 may require a clear break above that resistance, while a deeper pullback would focus more on whether buyers hold that support zone, given the 52-week low of $106.37.
