Sterling slipped slightly against the dollar in early European trading on Wednesday, trading around 1.36362, with market sentiment turning cautious ahead of key US inflation data. The pound had earlier touched the 1.3650 level, supported by resilience in UK gilt yields, but modest pre-data dollar buying weighed on the pair, pushing it below that threshold.

**PCE Data as Short-Term Bellwether**

Market focus is firmly fixed on the US core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index for July, due later in the session. This gauge is the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, and its performance will directly influence market pricing of the Fed's subsequent rate path. A stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce the case for the Fed maintaining a restrictive stance, providing further support for the dollar and pressuring the pound; conversely, signs of cooling inflation could prompt the dollar to give back recent gains. Some market analysts note that major currency pairs are likely to remain in a narrow range before the data release.

**Pound's Own Fundamentals Provide a Buffer**

Despite short-term dollar strength, the pound's decline has been relatively limited. Strong UK services price momentum and resilient gilt yields have offered fundamental support for sterling. This has kept GBP/USD at relatively elevated levels recently, with no signs of a trend reversal. Market reports indicate traders are assessing the stickiness of UK inflation, which to some extent offsets the impact of external dollar fluctuations.

**Technical Focus on Key Support**

From a technical perspective, GBP/USD is finding initial support around 1.3625, the low area from Wednesday's early session. If strong US PCE data drives the pair lower, further downside support levels will come under test. On the upside, reclaiming and breaking above the 1.3660 level will be key to determining whether bulls can regain control. Overall, trading appetite remains subdued ahead of the major data release, and the pair's short-term direction awaits clarity.
