During Friday's Asian session, the British pound rallied strongly against the Japanese yen, trading near 209.83. After the Bank of Japan announced a rate hike to a 31-year high, the yen failed to gain support and instead weakened, pushing GBP/JPY above the 209.50 level and closing in on a two-week high.

**BOJ Rate Hike Delivered, Yen Faces "Sell-the-Fact" Pressure**

The BOJ decided to raise interest rates at its latest policy meeting, pushing rates to their highest level in 31 years. However, the market had already fully priced in this expectation, and a typical "sell-the-fact" move emerged after the decision, with the yen weakening broadly against major currencies. Market reports indicated that although BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda hinted at room for further hikes, the lack of stronger signals on future tightening quickly cooled investor bullishness on the yen. On an inflation-adjusted basis, Japan's interest rates remain in negative territory, which also undermined the yen's support from the rate hike.

**Technical Buying Emerges in GBP/JPY**

Driven by broad yen weakness, the GBP/JPY cross attracted substantial technical buying during the early Asian session, sending the exchange rate sharply higher. Earlier, the pair had been consolidating below 209.50, and the BOJ decision served as the catalyst for the breakout. From a chart perspective, after breaking above key resistance, GBP/JPY's short-term momentum leans to the upside, though technical pressure near prior highs warrants attention. If market risk appetite continues to improve, carry trade flows could further push this cross higher.

**Focus Turns to Policy Divergence Expectations**

Looking ahead, expectations of monetary policy divergence between the pound and the yen remain the core factor driving this currency pair's trajectory. The Bank of England has been relatively cautious in fighting inflation, while the BOJ, despite having started hiking rates, still faces deeply negative real rates, leaving the yen at a disadvantage in carry trades. Market participants cautioned that if Japanese authorities issue stronger verbal intervention warnings against excessive yen depreciation, or if global risk aversion suddenly spikes, GBP/JPY could see short-term pullbacks. However, as of Friday's midday session, the bullish structure remains intact.
