Revolut Hit by Ransom Demand: Hackers Seek 3 Million Monero or Data Leak

On September 17, according to CoinDesk, crypto asset trading platform Revolut was attacked by a hacker group named "iamnotavillain," which demanded a ransom of $3 million worth of Monero (XMR), equivalent to approximately 6,000 XMR, within 24 hours. In a public statement and countdown poster, the attackers threatened that if the platform refused to pay, they would sell the stolen customer data to other criminal groups for profit.

According to the investigation, the data breach was caused by an advanced social engineering attack. The attackers posed as government agency personnel sending requests for information, tricking staff into providing the data. The total number of affected accounts is at least 680, including users' identification documents and detailed transaction records. In response, Revolut issued a statement confirming it had noted the relevant developments and stated that its security systems and customer funds remain fully operational. The company noted that it has blocked the involved addresses and submitted relevant information to authorities, but as of press time, it had not responded to media inquiries regarding the final investigation results of the incident.
