Ayo Akinyele, Ripple's Senior Director of Engineering, stated that the company is developing a four-phase quantum-resistant migration plan for the XRP Ledger, aiming to complete the transition before quantum computers become a realistic threat. The plan includes assessing network exposure surfaces, testing quantum-resistant cryptographic schemes, running existing security systems in parallel with quantum-resistant alternatives, and preparing emergency response pathways in case quantum computing advances faster than expected. Akinyele emphasized that the migration goes far beyond replacing a single cryptographic algorithm, requiring more flexible infrastructure, stronger key management, and clearer upgrade paths. The XRP Ledger already supports changing the keys controlling an account without altering the account itself, a feature expected to ease future migration, though network independent validators will still need to coordinate any broader rule changes. Meanwhile, Anthropic's model last month reduced the work required to break a leading post-quantum signature candidate by 67 million times, and Bitcoin and Ethereum developers also released their respective migration plans this week. Akinyele noted that AI and quantum computing are different technologies but are driving financial infrastructure in the same direction, with AI agents beginning to trade and pay autonomously, imposing new demands on always-on, internet-native payment infrastructure.
