Robinhood Markets Inc. CEO Vlad Tenev said Tuesday that tokenization is an unstoppable force that will completely transform the financial system, urging the United States to take a leadership role in the space.
Tenev Pushes for Stock Tokenization
In a post on X, Tenev wrote that we are in the "early stages of a global tokenization supercycle." However, he expressed disappointment that tokenized stocks have yet to launch in the U.S. despite growing mainstream interest.
Notably, Robinhood launched tokenized stocks for its European customers last year, featuring blockchain-based equity in companies such as OpenAI and SpaceX.
Tenev said Robinhood's stock tokens are fully backed by the underlying securities and provide holders with dividend exposure. He argued that this distinction overlooks the true significance of what tokenization brings.
He anticipates that regulatory progress will support more complex token structures, potentially allowing tokenized stocks to "carry the full rights of traditional stocks."
The U.S. must continue to lead.

Tenev Doesn't Want Americans Left Behind
Tenev further emphasized that tokenization could offer additional benefits, such as real-time settlement, native 24/7 trading, and giving people more control over their assets.
The CEO urged U.S. policymakers to "move fast" to modernize rules so that tokenized stock trading can become a reality.
"It would be a strange outcome if the rest of the world could build the future of ownership around U.S. assets while Americans themselves are left behind," he said.
Notably, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is preparing to roll out a framework for trading blockchain-based versions of popular Wall Street-listed stocks.
The so-called "innovation exemption" proposal aims to provide eligible companies with a regulatory sandbox, allowing them to issue and trade tokenized securities on-chain under lighter compliance conditions within a limited time window, while still operating under SEC oversight.
Broader Goals
Tenev's advocacy for stock tokenization aligns with his previous remarks on expanding retail participation in financial markets. Last month, he expressed a desire for every American to gain exposure to the U.S. stock market.
During Robinhood's second-quarter earnings call last month, Tenev said the company seeks to build a "durable" foundation for the U.S. cryptocurrency industry, viewing the CLARITY Act as a step toward that goal.
Stock Performance
According to Edge Stock Rankings, Robinhood shares closed down 4.90% at $91.53 in regular trading Tuesday, and fell 0.49% in after-hours trading. Edge Stock Rankings indicate that HOOD stock maintains a strong price trend over the medium term but underperforms over the short and long term.
