Sanders Warns AI Tycoons Could Destroy Jobs and Environment, Calls for Data Center Pause

Senator Bernie Sanders criticized major tech companies, saying their artificial intelligence could impact employment, privacy, power costs, and the environment, while calling for a pause on AI data center construction.

On Wednesday, Sanders posted on X, arguing that Americans have good reason to distrust powerful tech companies.

"Americans don't trust Big Tech oligarchs for good reason," he wrote.

The senator warned that AI tycoons "threaten to destroy their jobs, invade their privacy, jack up their electricity bills, and ruin the environment."

Sanders then called for a halt to physical expansion, stating, "We need a moratorium on AI data centers."

AI Data Centers Face Growing Scrutiny

Earlier, investor Kevin O'Leary said AI data center developers need to win community trust through transparent disclosure of water usage, emissions, power consumption, jobs, and economic benefits.

He urged developers to provide their own energy sources to avoid shifting costs onto local residents.

Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. CEO Elon Musk backed Nvidia Corp's claim that data centers account for only about 0.2% of U.S. daily water consumption.

Nvidia said newer liquid cooling technologies can reduce water usage, and in favorable climates, cooling-related water consumption could approach zero.

Microsoft Corp CEO Satya Nadella announced that the company's Fairwater data center in Wisconsin has come online ahead of schedule.

He called it "the most powerful AI data center in the world," as Microsoft continues expanding its global AI infrastructure.

Americans Oppose AI Data Centers

In May, a Gallup poll found that 71% of Americans oppose building AI data centers in their local areas, with 48% expressing strong opposition.

Concerns include electricity and water consumption, pollution, noise, and rising utility bills. Opposition was particularly strong among environmentally conscious Americans, Democrats, and women.

These findings come as AI infrastructure spending accelerates. U.S. data center construction reached a record $45.1 billion, with building activity surging 228% since ChatGPT launched in 2022.

Meanwhile, the global data center CPU market is projected to reach approximately $80 billion by 2028, intensifying competition among Intel, AMD, and Arm Holdings.
