Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans after the Senate rejected a resolution seeking to end U.S. military involvement in the Iran war.

In a post on X on Monday, Schumer contrasted the war's duration with Trump's earlier prediction that the conflict would be relatively brief.

"Remember when Trump said his war in Iran would only last four to five weeks?" he said. "It's now in its eighth month, and the American people and our troops are paying the price."

He added, "Last week, Senate Republicans had the chance to vote to end this illegal war, but instead they voted to keep it going."

Schumer further stated, "They are complicit."

Iran War Drives Up Costs and Sparks Political Concerns

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the Iran war has pushed affordability issues to the forefront of voters' concerns, with surging diesel prices adding pressure on farmers and truckers.

Republicans have called for measures such as a temporary ban on diesel exports, while officials and economists warn that restricting fuel exports could reduce supply.

Senator Mark Kelly criticized the war's strategy, saying the Trump administration entered the conflict without clear objectives or an exit plan.

Kelly said the war has resulted in more than 20 U.S. military deaths and roughly 800 injuries, with total costs exceeding $40 billion and no end in sight.

Trump Pressures Iran and China

Last week, Trump reportedly rejected a seven-day ceasefire proposal from Iran, with U.S. attacks expected to resume after the November midterm elections.

Tehran proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks in exchange for U.S. concessions, including lifting its maritime blockade and easing economic pressure.

Trump also urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to stop aiding Iran. While U.S. officials said Washington has received assurances from Beijing that it will halt support for Iran, a senior Iranian official said China will maintain its economic, political, and military ties with Tehran.
