SK Hynix Considers Building Memory Chip JV Plant in Japan

On August 31, SK Hynix is studying the feasibility of producing memory chips in Japan through a joint venture, one of several options the company is considering to meet surging AI demand while controlling production costs. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said during his attendance at a meeting of business chambers from South Korea and Japan in Sendai that SK Hynix is considering multiple locations to build a jointly operated plant.

Chey Tae-won said in an interview: "We are scouting sites across Japan. Anywhere with sufficient electricity and water resources would work." When asked about potential partners or specific locations in Japan, he declined to elaborate further. SK Group's businesses span energy, telecommunications, and chips, and it oversees major capital allocation decisions at the group level.
